Trade Replay

Trade Replay lets you re-watch any past trade bar-by-bar on a TradingView chart. The chart starts at a point before your entry, reveals candles one at a time as you step or play, and overlays your actual entry, exit, stop loss, and take profit levels so you can study exactly what happened.

Opening Trade Replay

There are two ways to open the replay page for a trade:

  • From the trade detail page - Click the Replay button in the action bar at the top of any trade. The button only appears for supported symbols.
  • From the trade detail Replay tab - Open a trade, click the Replay tab, then click Start Replay (or Replay Again if you have reviewed it before).

The replay opens at /journal/trade/{id}/replay.

Supported Symbols

Chart data is available for the following instruments:

Category Symbols
Micro Futures MNQ, MES, MCL, MGC, M2K, MYM
E-mini / Full Futures NQ, ES, CL, GC, RTY, YM
Forex Majors EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, USDCAD, AUDUSD, NZDUSD
Forex Crosses EUR/GBP/AUD/NZD crosses against JPY, CHF, CAD, and each other (26 pairs)
Crypto BTCUSD, ETHUSD
Metals XAUUSD (Gold), XAGUSD (Silver)

If your trade's symbol is not in this list, the chart area shows a "Chart replay not available" message. The trade details panel on the right is still accessible.

Futures Contract Codes

Month and year codes are stripped automatically. For example, MNQH25 is treated as MNQ.

Page Layout

The replay page has three main areas:

  • Header bar - Back link, symbol, direction, date, and reviewed status badge
  • Chart area (left, ~75% width) - TradingView chart with floating replay controls and a timeline bar below
  • Trade details panel (right, ~25% width) - Collapsible sections showing executions, performance, context, tags, screenshots, notes, and replay history

On mobile, the trade details panel is hidden by default. Tap the document icon in the header to open it as a slide-over drawer.

Chart Overlays

When the chart loads, several overlays are drawn automatically:

  • Entry arrows - Arrow markers at the price and time of each entry execution
  • Exit arrows - Arrow markers at the price and time of each exit execution
  • SL/TP region - A shaded rectangle from entry to exit spanning between your stop loss and take profit levels (shown in win/loss color based on outcome). If only one level is saved, a partial line is drawn instead.
  • Annotation callouts - Notes you have previously saved appear as callout shapes at their recorded time on the chart

Three toolbar buttons in the chart let you toggle overlays:

  • Execution markers button - Cycles through: arrows only (dimmed), arrows + price/time labels, or all hidden
  • SL/TP position button - Toggles the stop loss/take profit region on or off (only shown if at least one of SL or TP is saved)
  • Chart Notes button - Toggles annotation callouts on the chart (only shown if annotations exist)

In non-replay mode, clicking anywhere on the timeline bar below the chart scrolls the chart to that point in time.

Auto-Selected Timeframe

When you open replay, the chart timeframe is chosen automatically based on your trade's holding time:

Holding Time Default Timeframe
Under 15 minutes1 minute
15 minutes to 1 hour5 minutes
1 hour to 4 hours5 minutes
4 hours to 24 hours15 minutes
1 day to 7 days1 hour
Over 7 days4 hours

You can change the chart timeframe using TradingView's built-in timeframe controls at any time, including while replay is active.

Entering Replay Mode

Click the Replay button in the floating controls panel. The chart rewinds to your entry time, hiding all candles from that point forward. The "Not Reviewed" badge in the header updates to "Reviewed" once you complete or exit a session.

Daily Replay Limit (Free Plan)

Free accounts can start replay for up to 3 unique trades per day. Replaying the same trade again on the same day does not count as an additional use. Pro accounts have unlimited replays.

Replay Controls

A floating panel appears over the chart with all playback controls. You can drag it by the grip handle at the left edge to reposition it anywhere on the chart.

Control Action
Replay button Enter replay mode (rewinds chart to entry time)
Step Backward Remove the last revealed bar and go one step back
Play / Pause Auto-advance bars at the selected speed; click again to pause
Step Forward Reveal one bar at a time
Stop Exit replay mode and restore the full chart
Speed dropdown Set auto-play speed: 20x, 10x, 3x, 2x, 1x, 0.5x, 0.3x, or 0.1x
Timeframe dropdown Set bar step size in minutes (Pro only — see below)
Add Note button Save an annotation at the current replay position (Pro only)

Replay Timeframe (Pro)

The timeframe dropdown controls the step size — how many minutes each bar step covers. Available options are divisors of the chart's current resolution, up to a maximum of 60 minutes:

  • On a 5-minute chart: options are 5m, 3m, 2m, 1m
  • On a 15-minute chart: options are 15m, 5m, 3m, 1m
  • On a 60-minute chart: options are 60m, 30m, 15m, 10m, 5m, 3m, 2m, 1m

Choosing a smaller timeframe than the chart resolution lets you see intra-candle price movement — for example, stepping through a 5-minute chart in 1-minute increments. This is a Pro feature. Free users are locked to the chart's base resolution.

Replay Speed

Speed applies during auto-play mode only. The multiplier is relative to one bar per second at 1x:

  • 20x - Fastest, one bar every 50 ms
  • 10x - One bar every 100 ms
  • 3x - One bar every 333 ms
  • 2x - One bar every 500 ms
  • 1x - One bar per second (default)
  • 0.5x - One bar every 2 seconds
  • 0.3x - One bar every 3 seconds
  • 0.1x - Slowest, one bar every 10 seconds

Timeline Bar

Below the chart, a progress bar spans the full duration of your trade (entry time to exit time):

  • The filled area shows how far through the trade the replay has progressed
  • The handle can be dragged left or right to scrub to any point (in replay mode)
  • Entry and Exit labels appear below the bar at the correct time positions
  • Annotation flags appear on the bar where notes have been saved; click a flag to view, edit, or delete the note
  • A progress badge next to the controls shows the current bar count (e.g., "12 / 47 bars")

When not in replay mode, clicking anywhere on the timeline scrolls the chart to that time without entering replay.

Live Trading Position (Pro)

While replay is active, a live position overlay tracks your trade's actual executions as bars are revealed:

  • An entry price line appears on the chart when the first entry execution time is reached
  • A position badge shows real-time unrealized P&L calculated from the last bar's close price
  • If stop loss and take profit prices are saved on the trade, SL and TP order lines appear with badges while the position is open
  • Partial exits (scale-outs) are tracked — the position quantity and average entry price update accordingly
  • When the last exit execution is reached, all position visuals are removed

The position badge and entry line color reflect your P&L colors (win/loss/breakeven) from Settings > Appearance > Theme. This feature requires a Pro subscription.

Annotations (Pro)

While replay is active, you can save timestamped notes at specific moments in the trade. Annotations are a Pro feature.

Adding a Note

Two ways to add an annotation:

  • Click the Add Note button in the floating controls panel — saves the note at the current replay position
  • Double-click anywhere on the timeline bar — saves the note at the clicked time position

A dialog opens where you can type your note (up to 500 characters). Click Save to confirm.

Viewing and Managing Notes

  • Annotation flags appear on the timeline bar; click a flag to open a popover showing the note text
  • The popover has Edit and Delete buttons
  • Note labels also appear below the timeline bar with connector lines; clicking a label opens the same popover
  • If labels overlap, they are automatically staggered to separate rows to stay readable
  • If annotation callout shapes are enabled (via the toolbar button), notes also appear directly on the chart at their recorded time

Reflection

When you exit replay (by clicking Stop or navigating away), a Replay Review dialog appears. It shows your session duration and step count, and includes a text field to write what you learned from reviewing this trade.

  • Click Save & Exit to record your reflection and end the session
  • Click Skip to end the session without writing a reflection (session stats are still saved)
  • If you have already written a reflection for this trade, the existing text is pre-filled and the button reads Update & Exit

Session stats (duration, bar steps, timeframe used) and the reflection note are saved per trade. They appear in:

  • The Replay tab on the trade detail page, which shows session history and the saved reflection
  • The Replay Stats section of the right-hand panel on the replay page itself

Copy Trading and Replay

When you use Copy Trading Groups, replay data is shared across all copies of a trade. Annotations, drawings, saved chart layouts, and reflections you create on one copy are visible from any other copy in the group. Starting a replay session on a copy opens the same shared review record as the source trade.

When navigating trades with Prev and Next in the right panel, the navigation skips sibling copies within the same group — so you step through unique trades rather than seeing the same trade repeated for each copy account.

Trade Navigation

At the bottom of the trade details panel, Prev and Next buttons let you move to the previous or next trade (ordered by date) without going back to the trade list. If replay is active when you click a navigation button, the reflection dialog appears first.

Right Panel Sections

The right panel shows trade data alongside the chart. Each section is collapsible:

Section Contents Default State
Executions Individual entry and exit prices, quantities, and times; average entry and exit; SL and TP prices Open
Performance Net P&L, Gross P&L, Fees, Points, Hold Time, R:R Realized, R:R Expected, Grade Open
Context Strategy, Setup, Session, Market Condition, Bias, Emotional State, Confidence Collapsed
Tags Tags applied to the trade Collapsed
Screenshots Attached screenshots; click a thumbnail to view full-size Open
Notes Thought Process, Mistakes, Learning Notes, General Notes (each individually collapsible) Open
Replay Stats Total sessions, total review time, and whether a reflection has been saved Collapsed

Common Issues

Replay button not visible on trade detail

The Replay button only appears when the trade's symbol is supported. If it is missing, the symbol does not have chart data available.

Daily limit reached

Free accounts are limited to 3 unique trades per day. Replaying the same trade again does not use an additional slot. Upgrade to Pro for unlimited daily replays.

Chart shows "Not available"

The symbol is not in the supported list. Trade details are still accessible in the right panel.

Progress bar is empty after entering replay

The bar advances as you step or play. At step 0 (just entered replay), the fill is at 0%.
