Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your account. After enabling 2FA, you'll need both your password and a code from your phone to log in.
What You'll Need
An authenticator app on your phone. Popular options:
- Google Authenticator (iOS / Android)
- Authy (iOS / Android / Desktop)
- Microsoft Authenticator (iOS / Android)
- 1Password (iOS / Android / Desktop)
Any app that supports TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) will work.
Enabling 2FA
- Go to Settings > Security
- Click Enable Two-Factor Authentication
- Click Begin Setup
Step 1: Scan QR Code
- Open your authenticator app
- Tap the + or Add Account button
- Choose Scan QR Code
- Point your camera at the QR code on screen
Your authenticator app will add "Tradavity" to your accounts and start generating 6-digit codes.
Click "Can't scan the code?" to see the secret key. Enter this key manually in your authenticator app.
Step 2: Verify Setup
- Look at the 6-digit code in your authenticator app
- Enter the code on the Tradavity setup page
- Click Verify & Enable
The code changes every 30 seconds. If your code doesn't work, wait for a new one and try again.
Step 3: Save Backup Codes
After verification, you'll see 8 backup codes. These are one-time use codes for emergencies.
- Save these codes somewhere safe (password manager, printed paper, secure note)
- Each code can only be used once
- Use a backup code if you lose access to your authenticator app
If you lose your phone and don't have backup codes, you won't be able to access your account. Store them securely!
Click I've Saved My Codes to complete setup.
Logging In with 2FA
After enabling 2FA, logging in works like this:
- Enter your email and password as usual
- You'll be asked for a verification code
- Open your authenticator app and find the Tradavity code
- Enter the 6-digit code
- Click Verify
Using Backup Codes
If you can't access your authenticator app:
- On the verification screen, click Use backup code
- Enter one of your saved backup codes
- Click Verify
That backup code is now used and won't work again.
Regenerating Backup Codes
If you've used some backup codes or want new ones:
- Go to Settings > Security
- Click Regenerate Backup Codes
- Enter a code from your authenticator app to confirm
- Save your new backup codes
Your old backup codes will stop working immediately.
Disabling 2FA
If you need to turn off 2FA:
- Go to Settings > Security
- Click Disable Two-Factor Authentication
- Enter your password to confirm
- Click Disable 2FA
Your account will return to password-only login.
Troubleshooting
Code Not Working
- Wait for a new code - Codes change every 30 seconds
- Check your phone's time - TOTP codes depend on accurate time. Enable automatic time on your phone.
- Make sure you're using the right account - If you have multiple accounts in your authenticator, find the one labeled "Tradavity"
Lost Phone
- Use a backup code to log in
- Once logged in, disable 2FA in Settings > Security
- Set up 2FA again with your new device
No Backup Codes
If you lost your phone AND don't have backup codes, contact support. You'll need to verify your identity to regain access.
